À bientôt America

23 Aug

I’m not really one for good-byes, they seem so final, especially in this day and age when a click of a mouse brings you that much closer to people in your life.  Instead, I prefer “see you soon” or as they say in France “à bientôt.”  But, before I take off to the land of wine and cheese I thought I would share a few facts about my new home of Lyon, France:

  • Lyon is in east-central France in the Rhône-Alpes region, situated between Paris and Marseille.
  • Lyon is located about 292 mi from Paris, 99 mi from Geneva, Switzerland, 174 mi from Turin, Italy and 373 mi from Barcelona, Spain – good for traveling around!
  • Lyon forms the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris.
  • The city is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Lyon was historically known as an important area for the production and weaving of silk and in modern times has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France (anyone that knows me knows that I’m most excited about this).  In 2010, French gastronomy was declared part of the world’s heritage. The only cuisine to have this distinction.
  • My husband would kill me if I didn’t mention that the local professional football team is called Olympique Lyonnais and has increased the profile of Lyon internationally through participation in European football championships.
  • Lyon also hosts the international headquarters of Interpol, the world’s largest international police organization.
  • Having just worked for a company which built its reputation upon innovation, it’s comforting to know that in 2010 Lyon was ranked 9th globally and 2nd in France for innovation.

We look forward to seeing you soon for a visit in Lyon!
